Skip Counting

For mathematics we are learning how to skip count in 2s.  We found this Go Noodle video and we have enjoyed singing the song and learning the actions.  Some kids wanted to show their family at home!

School Cross Country

On Friday it is our school Cross Country.  It is to be held at Rabbit Island and we will be travelling there and back by bus.  The postponement date is for the following Friday.  If you are unsure of the weather on the day, you can ring the office to check. We will leave school to get on the bus at 9am and will be heading back to school around 12 lunchtime.  You are most welcome to take your child home after the cross country from Rabbit Island, but please let Mrs Trolle or Mrs Howley know so we can mark them off our list.

The children will need:
*To wear their PE gear and running shoes to school (with their warm school polar fleece) and some track pants.  No bare feet!
*They can bring an extra jacket and/or rain coat.
*Their packed morning tea and lunch and a large drink of water.

An approximate timetable for the morning is:
9.45am  5 year old warm up (6 year old warm up and race)
10.05am 5 year old race (6 year olds begin activity rotations)
10.25am 5 year olds begin activity rotations

*If you would like to see all age groups and their times, come and have a look at the timetable on our noticeboard in Hui Space.

The activity rotations are 20 minute sessions with a teacher (a game, a morning tea break, etc).  They keep the children entertained and busy for the morning after their race.

You are most welcome to come and support us on the day.  Mrs McQuillan is always looking for any parents to help with set up/pack up or standing out on the course to direct the children.

Please come and see us if you have any other questions :)

Volcano Experiment

Today we tried another science experiment to see the reaction of two ingredients that make Carbon Dioxide gas.  Rob helped us build a volcano using sand.  Inside it went baking soda, red food colouring, dishwashing liquid and last of all the vinegar.  There was lots of foamy, fizzy lava gushing out of the volcano!

Later Rob asked us to pretend that we were the ingredients to act out the reaction.  Rob gave us a number (1, 2 or 3). The girls were the vinegar and the boys were the baking soda.   We mixed together and then we separated into our 3 groups.  The number 1 children turned into water.  The number 2 children turned into salt and the number 3 children were Carbon Dioxide gas!

Waking Up Yeast

This morning we were lucky to have Rob (Lucas' Dad) parent help in our classroom.  He did a science experiment with us about waking up yeast.  This was related to our Fairytale (The Little Red Hen) and our Kitchen Science.

We found out that yeast is a fungi.  When it is mixed with warm water and sugar it wakes up and starts to eat the sugar.  As it eats, it makes a gas called Carbon Dioxide.  Yeast mixed with warm water and sugar helps to make the bread rise in the oven.  Carbon Dioxide gas makes air bubbles in the bread.

We watched the yeast, warm water and sugar fizz up and make bubbles.  Then Rob put a balloon over the end of the bottle and the gas slowly filled up the balloon!

Mother's Day Cards

Our class made some special Mother's Day cards for our mums today.  Our mums do so much for us, so we tried to write in our best handwriting in our cards!  We hope the mums have a lovely day on Sunday.

Hockey Skills

Today Brenna came to teach us some Hockey Skills. We learnt how to hold our hockey sticks and how to dribble the ball.  We played "Creep Up Jack" and "Rats and Cats".  Ask us how to play each game and we will explain!  Everyone joined in and gave it a go which was awesome!  Mrs Trolle gave our whole class a sticker for our awesome effort at hockey.  We will have hockey skills for two more weeks (on Wednesday mornings).
